American Idol Fans: Season 10 Premieres Tonight, Will It Shine or Fade?

American Idol has been a big influence on different levels over the past nine years. Millions of viewers have set aside their time and set alarms for that time of the week where they get to watch their favorite contestants sing for the chance to make it big.

American Idol may have begun with 9.9 million viewers for the very first episode, but it grew quickly over the next few seasons, peaking at season five with numbers averaging 30.6 million viewers. From that point on, the numbers decreased, losing 19 percent of viewers by the season finale of season six; 10 percent down by the end of season seven; 13 percent season eight; and, although American Idol finished as last season’s highest-ranking show, season nine saw a 9 percent drop.

With its success, there have been many big names that have sponsored American Idol like Detroit MI automaker Ford Motor Company with its Ford vehicle campaigns that have featured different cars over various seasons. Some believe that the show has lost the power and steam it once had, while others believe with the changes for this new season, American Idol has potential.

“All the ingredients have kind of been invigorated. I think the show is going to be a phoenix,” said Joshua Estrin, a Hollywood insider, in a press release.

Two big changes for this season:

1. New Judges: Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler. They will be joining the longest-lasting judge Randy Jackson and host Ryan Seacrest.
2. New age limits: 15 – 28. These ages were changed from the original range of 16 – 24. The reason for this change was in response to the young pop sensations like Justin Bieber who dominate the tween demographic.

There are a lot of fans looking forward to American Idol’s 10th Season and some who are over the hype. This season may be the final turning point for American Idol, but will it be on fire or sizzle out?
