Buddytv Talks With Battlestar Galactica’s Grace Park
Schizophrenia seems to be a hot topic in American television these days, and although the disorder is no laughing matter, some of the networks have struck gold by creating characters who possess multiple alter egos.
Take the popular Sci-Fi show, Battlestar Galactica, for one. The show features a character named Sharon Valerii, played by Korean actress, Grace Park. Lieutenant Junior Grade Sharon is not just a beautiful and schizophrenic Cylon, but a beautiful and schizophrenic robot Cylon at that. As if it weren’t hard enough to pull off a character with layers of other characters within her, Park must also be able to engage in the ever-changing emotional state of a schizophrenic individual, while, of course, keeping in mind that the character is a machine. How does she do it?
Maybe it helps that Park holds a degree in psychology from the University of British Columbia. Perhaps Park’s educational background somehow allows her to convincingly manifest Sharon’s complex alter egos who, by the way, go by the names of Boomer and Athena. All three personalities display different strengths and weaknesses, with Athena being the most physically active, Sharon being the most emotionally torn, and Boomer being the most defiant and enraged.
It must be so exhausting to have to bring to life such multifaceted characters in Battlestar Galactica, but Park claims to experience a sense of release, especially when she is doing scenes as Athena. Park says that a character like Athena, who spends most of her time on her feet dodging enemies and having little energy to deal with her feelings, gives Park the opportunity to breathe and take a break from riding the giant emotional rollercoaster she calls her life.
Once again, the world of the fantastic provides a temporary window of stability, even if it is just through a schizophrenic robot from the future on a sci-fi television series called Battlestar Galactica. But while the chance to portray a unique character proves cathartic for Park, the viewing public has certainly seen it as a tremendous source of entertainment, hence the continuing success of the show.
